在一个妈妈的子宫里有两个胎儿，其中一个问另一个说，“你相信我们出生后还会有生命吗？”另一个回答说，“当然。你怎么会问这样的问题呢？出生后一定有些什么事情在等待着我们，也许我们在这里就是为将来我们会怎样做准备呢！”
“无稽之谈！”第一个坚定地说，“出生后根本没有生命。你说有那你能描述一下那生命的样式吗？”
第二个回答说，“我不知道。但相比这里，肯定会有更多的光，也许我们会用腿走路，用嘴吃东西。也许我们会有其他现在还不理解的感知。”
第一个接着说，“这是荒谬的。走路根本不可能。用嘴吃饭？更是可笑之至。脐带已经供应我们足够的营养和我们所需要的一切东西。但脐带太短，因此出生后会有生命，这在逻辑上已被完全排除在外。”
第二个坚持说，“嗯，我想应该有些什么东西，可能与这里不一样。也许我们不再需要这些物质性的脐带了。”
“荒唐！”第一个回答说，“况且如果出生后真有生命，为什么从来没有人从那里回来言一声？分娩就是生命的结束。至于分娩以后，除了黑暗、沉寂和遗忘之外乃一无所有，我们将被带进一片虚无。”
“好吧，我不知道，”第二个继续说，“但可以肯定的是，我们将会亲眼看见妈妈，她必会照顾我们。”
“妈妈？”第一个几乎尖叫起来，“你真的相信有一位妈妈？太可笑了。如果妈妈存在，那她现在在哪儿呢？”
第二个回答说，“她就在我们身边，我们被她包围着，我们属于她，也正是在她里面我们才能活着。没有她这个世界将不会也不可能存在。”
“得了。”第一个坚持说，“我没有看见她，因此唯一合理的解释是：她根本就不存在。”
第二个接着回答他说，“有时候，当你静下心来，当你聚精会神、用心倾听，你可以感受到妈妈与你同在，你可以听见她慈爱的声音，还有她从上而来的亲切召唤。”

In amother’swomb were two babies. One asked the other:“Do you believe in life afterdelivery?”The otherreplied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery.Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will belater.”
“Nonsense,”said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of lifewould that be?”
The secondsaid, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybewe will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we willhave other senses that we can’t understandnow.”
The firstreplied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating withour mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition andeverything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life afterdelivery is to be logically excluded.”
The secondinsisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s differentthan it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cordanymore.”
The firstreplied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has noone ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and inthe after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence andoblivion. It takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’tknow,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and shewill take care of us.”
The firstreplied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable.If Mother exists then where is She now?”
The secondsaid, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are ofHer. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would notand could not exist.”
Said the first:“Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’texist.”
To which thesecond replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focusand you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you canhear Her loving voice, calling down fromabove.”
